NHS waiting lists costs the Self-employed and average of £1560 per year in lost income*
The direct cost of sickness absence to employers in 2006 was considerable - £537 per employee (up from £531 in 2005), which, if extended to the UK workforce of 25 million, equates to £13.4bn. And, if indirect costs (for instance, lower customer satisfaction) are taken into account, the average cost per employee rises to £807, making a total cost to the UK economy of £20.2bn. But absence doesn't affect all employers equally and in the best performing quartile absence averaged just 2.7 days per employee compared with 12.0 days for employers in the worst performing quartile - a gap of 9.3 days.
Clearly, there is still plenty of room for improvement for some employers. Dudley Lusted, head of corporate health development at AXA PPP healthcare, says: 'Average absence levels have been pretty similar in recent years but, given the nine day gap between the best and worst performers, you have to wonder what's stopping so many employers from sorting this out.
'It may be that some employers think that employees who are regularly absent with supporting sick notes are untouchable but this is not true - there needs to be more leadership and discipline from the top. A critical part of this is taking the lead on creating a positive workplace culture where people are engaged and supported and where everyone appreciates the importance of good attendance.'
